The idea of world peace is too big for me. So I think of peace in my world. I used
to think that I could only have peace if certain external conditions were right.
If only I had enough money. If only all my chores were done. If only my partner
loved me enough. If only my car didn’t break down. If only I were healthier. If
only people were nicer to each other. If only, if only, if only. Of course the
conditions were never all set,
so there was no peace. When I took responsibility for becoming peace, this began
Peace is available in the here and now, but we must learn how to help it materialize.
It is not passive. It is not something we wait to have happen to us. It is something
we practice. Once we realize this, we no longer blame the lack of peace on someone
or something outside of us and we experience more peace. If we all took responsibility
for our own peace, the world would be more peaceful.
